Picea glauca 'Conica', commonly known as Dwarf Alberta Spruce, is a slow-growing, evergreen conifer with a dense, conical shape and finely textured bright green foliage. Originally discovered in Alberta, Canada, this cultivar is a popular choice for structured planting in both formal and informal landscapes.
It typically reaches 1.5 to 2 meters in height over many years (10–20 years) with a width of around 1 meter, maintaining its tight, pyramidal habit naturally without pruning.
The soft needles are bright green in spring and deepen slightly in color through the seasons, offering year-round visual interest. 'Conica' thrives in full sun, preferring well-drained, moist soil, and benefits from protection from harsh drying winds or intense reflected heat (especially in pots or paved areas).
Due to its neat form and small size, it is widely used in:
Foundation plantings
Containers and patio pots
Formal garden designs
Entryways and path borders
While very low-maintenance, 'Conica' can be sensitive to spider mites in hot, dry conditions—so occasional watering and rinsing in dry spells is beneficial.
