Microbiota decussata, commonly known as Siberian Carpet Cypress, is a slow-spreading, low-mounding conifer native to the mountainous regions of eastern Russia. It features soft, scale-like foliage arranged in flat sprays, giving it a feathery, fern-like texture.
This ground-hugging evergreen typically grows to 30–50 cm in height and 1–2 meters in width, making it ideal for ground cover, rock gardens, or bank stabilization. During the growing season, its foliage is a rich green, but in winter, it takes on a distinctive purplish-bronze hue, adding seasonal color to the landscape.
Microbiota is prized for its cold tolerance (hardy to -40°C), drought resistance, and minimal maintenance needs. It performs best in full sun to partial shade, and in well-drained soil, and does not require pruning to maintain its tidy appearance.
Unlike junipers, it’s non-prickly and softer to the touch, making it a friendly alternative for family gardens or public spaces. It also exhibits good shade tolerance compared to many other groundcover conifers.
